Stainless Steel 304

304, 304L

All-purpose grades

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Excellent formability
  • Excellent weldability
  • Excellent impact strength
  • Supplied with a range of functional and aesthetic surface finishes

These are an economical and versatile group of stainless steels. They are widely used in processing, storage and transport of foodstuffs and beverages. They possess a good level of resistance to atmospheric corrosion and are resistant to a wide range of both organic and inorganic chemicals.

Applications

Typically used in a wide range of areas including food and beverage manufacture and transportation. While they are suitable for use in most exterior environments they should not be used in marine or coastal areas and in areas of high pollution or heavy industrial activity they should be washed regularly to prevent the build up of deposits that may accelerate corrosion.

Hardening

Heat treating these steels will not harden them. However cold working can harden them.

Working

Cold Working

Easily formed and fabricated using the full range of cold working processes. These will harden the steel and may induce a slight magnetic effect.

Hot working

Can be forged in the range between 925 C and 1200 C. To produce maximum resistance to corrosion it should be annealed at 1040 C minimum and water quenched or fast cooled by other means.

Welding

Easily welded by the full range of procedures with the exception of oxcyacetylene.

Machining

Best machined at slower speeds and heavier feeds. Ensure good lubrication and sharp tooling. It is generally resistant to chip breaking.
